A Special Afternoon in Milton Keynes: Celebrating Legacy, Talent and Remarkable Generosity

Dec 02, 2025 3 min read

Last week’s Sporting Lunch in Milton Keynes was a powerful reminder of what makes the SportsAid Eastern community so unique. The room at Leonardo Hotel was full, the atmosphere was vibrant and every moment reflected the shared belief that young athletes deserve the opportunity to thrive.

Honouring Roger Fennemore MBE

The afternoon began with a moment of reflection for Roger Fennemore MBE, who founded the Milton Keynes Sporting Lunch Club 25 years ago and sadly passed away last week. Roger’s vision created the very foundation this event stands on today. His commitment to supporting athletes at the earliest stages of their careers has shaped the path of hundreds of young people across the region. His legacy was felt deeply throughout the room, and it continues to guide the purpose and spirit of SportsAid Eastern.

Spotlight on Two Rising Stars

Guests then had the pleasure of meeting two of our current beneficiaries, Sean Chigumba and Joshua Prickett, both 18 and rising talents in wheelchair basketball. Their dedication, positivity and ambition shone through as they shared more about their sporting journeys.

We extend our gratitude to Oakwood Resources, whose support allowed us to present two athletes at the event. Their ongoing commitment to nurturing young sporting talent plays a crucial role in helping athletes like Sean and Joshua access the training and opportunities they need.

Insights from Mark Clattenburg

One of the highlights of the afternoon came from our guest speaker, Mark Clattenburg. Known worldwide for his refereeing career across Premier League, Champions League and international fixtures, Mark brought humour, insight and honesty to the room.

His stories about the pressure of decision-making at the highest level, his experiences in major finals and his views on VAR offered a fascinating behind-the-scenes look into modern football.

The audience was completely engaged from start to finish.

A Moment of Exceptional Generosity

The most memorable moment of the afternoon came when one of the business guests made an extraordinary £10,000 donation to support Sean and Joshua’s development.

This contribution will directly fund coaching, equipment and competition opportunities, helping remove the financial barriers that so often limit young athletes. It was an emotional and uplifting moment that captured the very heart of what these lunches represent: community, belief and the power of shared generosity.

A Heartfelt Thank You

We would like to thank Milton Keynes Business Leaders Partnership, our hosts for the afternoon, along with all our sponsors, guests and supporters who make these events possible. Your commitment ensures young athletes across the East of England can keep moving forward with confidence and opportunity.

The Milton Keynes Sporting Lunch continues to grow because of the people who attend, support and believe in the work we do. Last week’s event was a perfect reflection of that spirit.
