Richard Whitehead’s marathon performance at Dorney

Jun 16, 2025 2 min read

On Friday 13 June (unlucky for some but not for David Scott!), a crowd of 150 gathered at Dorney for a truly special and humbling lunch featuring London 2012 Paralympic star Richard Whitehead MBE.

Richard, a double amputee and Paralympic gold medallist, presented a SportsAid grant to David Scott, a visually impaired Goalball player from High Wycombe, who aspires to compete at the Paralympics. David found out about the sport through an after school club for visually impaired students back in 2010.

The event was a heartfelt celebration of disability sport and the incredible potential of young athletes in the region.

As a powerful motivational speaker, Richard captivated sponsors and guests alike, sharing insights from his Paralympic journey. He emphasised that while society can and should do more to support everyone, having a disability should never be a barrier to pursuing one’s dreams either.

We were also thrilled to welcome Seymour Taylor and Handelsbanken as new sponsors, joining the expanding SportsAid network committed to backing local young Buckinghamshire sporting talent.

Richard is currently halfway through an extraordinary challenge – running 20 marathons across the globe in 2025 to inspire others and raise awareness for disability sport. His final marathon later this year will mark an incredible milestone: his 100th marathon!

We wish David every success as he continues his Goalball journey.
